One translation to unify them all?

Abstract

GRUT stands for GRand Unified Translation and is a tool for merging different translations of similar original sentences into one translation in order to maximize language consistency between groups of applications.

Motivation

I wanted to learn a new, modern programming or scripting language to increase my programming skills. I chose python for coding the 'core', GTK+ for the 'user interface' and PyGTK for binding them. MySQL is currently used for storing data, but the DB-API should be able to handle any backend database.

Also, as a way of giving back to the open source community, I initially focus on unifying the dutch translations within the GNOME project. This gives me enough translations to experiment with. The outcome should be a better overall translation of all applications within the GNOME 2.4 release. Which (hopefully) attracts more users to this great platform!

At the time of the GRUT 1.8 release, its internals has become a mess. Since I also decided I wanted to learn about XML parsers, I've used 2 of them. And there's code duplication all over the place. So, use it, but don't look at the source ;-)

Screenshots

It would be great if you send me GRUT screenshots in foreign languages if you like GRUT. Have a look at what people sent me so far.

This is what you see (click the screenshot to enlarge):
The original string you're currently unifying is shown in the upper right panel (which is "_Edit").
On the left side you see the different translations of the original string (for 37 occurences of "_Edit", there are 8 different Dutch translations).
Sometimes a translation depends on the context, but in this case you want all shorthand keys to be the same in all applications so you select the best one and click 'Apply to all'.
